Dark and Stormy Nights

Write what you know. Snoopy does.

It's what we're supposed to do, right? And that's fine. But sometimes I think we could be doing one better.

Write what you want to know.

Something you're passionate about. Something new. Something you have to learn about. I've always been fascinated by Venice, but I've never yet set a story there because it's not what I know. But maybe I should. Maybe that's exactly the kind of story that will haunt my sleep.

So I guess that's my thought for this weekend. Write what you love, not necessarily what you know. What do you think?

  1. Take a trip to Venice, and tell yourself it's okay to spend the money because you're there to research your book.

  2. I agree totally. Writing, for me, is a process of discovery. I guess it's why I'll never be a plotter. Who would want to write a book where they know what's going to happen?

  4. Oooh, I like Angela's idea!

I have done a little of both, and they have both been great experiences. :)

  5. So true. If I wrote about what I know - well, let's just say they'd be very short stories. I love the idea of researching books in exotic places.

    Have a great weekend!

  6. Hmm... what don't I know? Problem is, you don't know what you don't know!

  7. I agree. Why not Venice? I've always liked that Snoopy cartoon.

  8. Hey, continuing on Snoopy's advice: he could probably write a twenty part series on the Red Baron even though he hardly ever leaves his back yard.

If you're passionate about something, write about it, even if you're not an expert on the subject. Don't worry too much about not bring accurate. If there's fire in your words, that all that matters. Besides, there's difference between being factual and being true.

  9. If we stuck strictly to only what we know, some of us *cough* would run out of material in an embarrassingly short time. I'm all for writing what you love or what you want to know.

  10. I totally agree. That's what a bit of research and a healthy dose of imagination are for!

  11. I agree. If I were to limit my writing to what I know, I couldn't have: time travel, aliens, or even...God? Anyway, point is, writing might devolve to the boring is we all just wrote what we know.

  12. if you are passionate about something then you did write about it, the words will really come out naturally because it would come from what your heart really speaks about... research and doing what you want or going to where you want will also make abig impact on what you are writing...

hope you could go to venice and write something about it.. seems like a beautiful place to me... enjoyed your blog..following you now.. hope you could visit my blog too... kissess!!!!

  13. I think if you're passionate about your subject, that's enough! Go for it.

  14. I think being passionate about your topic is great. It might lead you to research trips in Venice. I'm passionate about WWII and some of the events that occurred in England. I just went over and was able to do a little more research. My passion developed over time. I even found a blogger that is from the town part of my story takes place....Write what you love...even if you haven't been there yet.
